A trip to visit the rock art of South Africa was offered as a joint effort between the Rock Art Research Institute of the University of Witwatersrand in Johannesburg and the American Rock Art Research Association in July 2003. We were given an overview of the rock art of the country by flying from one region to the next and visiting with local experts in each area. We stayed at historic or unique hotels, including a former prison in Capetown. The thatched roof bungalows in the Drakensberg Mountains were especially appealing to us with great views of the area from the porch of each cabin.
